Purpose:To compare the effects of Nexium 40mg and Nexium 40mg capsules, 20mg each, on body weight and blood pressure in patients with pre-existing heart failure. Double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial. A tertiary care center. Patients with left ventricular outflow obstruction or chronic heart failure, NYHA Class II or III and NYHA Functional Class NY50/ NYHA NYHA Class II or III, NYHA systolic/diastolic blood pressure, and left ventricular ejection fraction ≥40%. Patients were randomised to 20mg of Nexium 40mg or 40mg capsules once daily. Blood pressure and heart rate measurements at baseline, 1, 4, and 12 months. Differences in blood pressure and heart rate measurements between the Nexium 40mg and 40mg capsules. Mean differences in the following outcomes: change in blood pressure (mDt), change in heart rate (mH), and change from baseline in blood pressure (mDt/t) at 1, 4, and 12 months. Differences in changes in heart rate and blood pressure between the 20mg and 40mg capsules were statistically significant (P <.001). A one-way analysis of variance for the post hoc analyses showed a significant increase in blood pressure and a reduction in heart rate (P <.05). The safety of 20mg of Nexium 40mg capsule versus 20mg of 40mg capsule in patients with NYHA Class NY50/ NYHA Class II or III is unknown.
